Although the current SBPro driver should in theory work at a basic level with a Soundblaster 16, a re-write of the SBPro driver to properly support the SB16 would be appropriate. The SBPro is a very basic DSP, and the SB16 adds a surprising number of improvements. This would be an excelent project for someone just starting out writing device drivers; both the existing SBPro driver and the SB16 hardware is very simple to understand, and the SB16 is well documented and emulated in hardware by almost every onboard audio chipset in existence!
